Last night we held our latest club competition at The Chequers in Fenny Stratford. It was our first club meet there and it was a cracking night. A big thank you to Owen for letting us use the space. We’ll definitely be back!

The competition was “Adjuncts”. Ten beers went up for judging, and as usual there was nothing boring about the line-up. Here’s how the evening went.

1. Richard D – Ginger Ninja Lager (Ginger & Lime) We started with the winner, though we didn’t know it yet. It was a crisp, pale 4.8% lager with a proper ginger and lime kick. 400g of minced ginger plus the juice and zest of five limes went in at flameout, on a clean pils malt base with some Hallertauer Mittelfrüh. It was really refreshing and well balanced, and it won best beer of the night. Congrats Richard! The full recipe is now on the site if you fancy having a go: Ginger Ninja Lager

2. Dan – Coconut Pale Ale A tropical twist next, with the coconut coming through nicely in a pale ale.

3. Andrew – Mango Chutney Pale Ale Yes, you read that right. A Mango. Chutney. Beer!. It went down really well and came joint second on the night. Accompanied with some Walkers poppadoms!.

4. Arthur – Biscoff Imperial Dessert Stout My own entry. A big, rich, biscuity dessert stout that also came joint second. 50+ Biscoff biscuits went into making this huge 9.6% stout. I’ll take that!

5. Jack – Stout with Spiced Rum Let’s just say Jack wasn’t shy with the spiced rum… A LOT of spiced rum. Nobody was complaining though!

6. Richard W – Date-Infused Dubbel A dubbel with dates. A dubbel date, if you will?

7. Matt – Dry Stout A special mention here. This was Matt’s first ever homebrew, and it was great! A really solid dry stout and a fantastic start. Welcome to the club, Matt!

8. Jack – Truffle Pale Ale This was the one that split the room. A couple of people absolutely loved it, but most of us struggled with it and it came last on the night. Fair play to Jack as that’s what these nights are all about and why we homebrew. We brew beers you’ll never see on a supermarket shelf!

9. Matthew – Oak-Infused Orange & Raisin Kveik/Saison A lovely beer which went down well and was full of adjuncts: oak, orange, raisin and a kveik/saison yeast. Another great beer.

10. Andrew – Lime Pickle Pale Ale Andrew finished the evening with a rather spicy kick. Between this and the mango chutney, his theme for the night was clearly “Indian” Pale Ale!

It was a great evening with some brilliant (and some brave!) beers, and good company as always. Thanks again to Owen and The Chequers for having us, and well done to everyone who brought a beer along, especially Matt on his first (of many!) homebrews.

Keep an eye on the events page for the next meet. See you there!
